NOVA Transition Caringbah – where trainees mature into adults

At Caringbah NOVA Transition, we’re proud to see our trainees becoming more confident, growing in self-esteem, speaking up for themselves and taking part in group activities, such as cooking and role plays. Each trainee contributes.

Through our individual and group supports, our trainees develop on many levels. Role plays, for example, are a fun and expressive way to develop interview and customer service skills. Our school leaver employment supports (SLES) are tailored to meet trainees' individual employment goals.

Two of our trainees have just gained open employment in their chosen jobs! It’s great to see their sense of achievement. They both worked really hard to get there. Many of our trainees find and keep a job through their work experience placements.

Cameron was very anxious when he first came to our program, but he knew he wanted to work in hospitality. We placed Cameron into work experience at a cafe one day a week. This led to a 6-month contract at 7.5 hours per week. His boss was so pleased that he created a position for Cameron working two days per week and plans to develop Cameron’s skills to enable him to begin a traineeship.

One of our favourite events here at Caringbah is our footy presentation day. This year the Cronulla Sharks are coming to visit. Last year we played trivia games, presented prizes and our guest speakers Isaac De Gois and Dylan Hill from the Sharks talked to us. We then served lunch. We've enjoyed guest speakers from local businesses in a wide variety of areas.

We watch TV show Celebrity Apprentice to enhance our learning. Each trainee chooses one apprentice to follow throughout the series and we ask questions about how they might improve, such as:

  • What could they have done better?
  • Did they work as part of a team?
  • Did they show good leadership skills?
  • Do they use good communication skills?
  • Do they actively listen to what is being said?
  • Have they got a good work ethic?

At the end of the series Celebrity Apprentice host Mark Bouris visits us to talk about work. He is a great man who takes the time to get to know our trainees.
