NOVA Transition Graduation 2016

NOVA Transition Graduation 2016

On the 7th of December, 2016 we held our annual NOVA Transition Graduation. This event celebrates the achievements of 74 young people living with a disability over their 2 year program. NOVA Transition is an intensive program which has a strong focus on job readiness and employment outcomes. During this time, our participants take part in over 150 hours of work experience, intensive one on one workshops designed to gain employment as well as learning about interview skills, how to design their resume and how to act in the workplace. This is done in conjunction with a nationally recognised qualification being a Certificate 1 in Workplace Education.

Every year our NOVA Transition graduation gets bigger and better. On average we have over 400 people in attendance, ranging from participants and their parents, to employers, politicians and NOVA staff. Every participant is rewarded with getting up on stage, receiving their certificate, having their photo taken, a lovely 3 course meal and wonderful entertainment. This year we Boys in the Band which played for over 45 minutes and the participants danced the day away. They also enjoyed the media wall where they can have their photo taken with their family, NOVA's CEO Martin Wren or NOVA Ambassador Paula Duncan. These photos are then printed off for the participants to take home on the day. Many of our participants have never been to such an event, much less one that is about them. This day signifies not only a milestone for their professional development, but allows them to experience something new. Many of them have not been to a live band or sat at a formal dining setting.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this day, is celebrating the fact that we have over 75 new tax payers. This day acknowledges the fact that they have earned not only a job, but they move into the real world with a job that is award wage and are now considered a contributing member of society. At NOVA Transition, we emphasis employment that is long term and sustainable, with many of our clients staying in the same job for many years. These jobs are not token jobs, they are meaningful, sustainable and most of the time hard work. Many of our NOVA Transition clients obtain jobs that are traineeships, apprenticeships and full-time employment, working up to 38 hours a week.

Often we are asked what types of jobs our clients get. We have a range of jobs such as Green keeping, office work, construction, hospitality, retail, warehousing and childcare. Many of these positions are entry level, however on occasion our clients obtain employment that does require a certain set of skills or qualifications. Last year one of our clients obtained a job on Manly ferries which requires a certain set of qualifications done prior to starting employment. This year one of clients started working at Rainmaker, where she uses databases to update financial planners with information regarding current financial trends or investments.

The NOVA Transition Graduation is perhaps NOVA's biggest day of the year and the staff look forward to it every year. It is a great way to bring everyone together and celebrate the fact that our hard work and dedication is changing the lives of people with a disability.
