Luke - Proud to have a full-time job at 20!
‘Not a lot of 20-year-olds can say they have a full-time job already,’ says Luke, who graduated from Rouse Hill NOVA Transition in 2015. But he’s proud to say that he works five days a week from 8.30 to 5 at the reception desk of the Westmead Hospital Research and Education Network. Apart from attending the desk and car parking, he is on hand to help with administration tasks, such as putting together information for the new staff orientation.
After Luke’s extensive work-experience placements at businesses such as Tex Mex, Readings Cinema and Gloria Jean’s, his goal was to find employment in either administration or retail. This experience in real workplaces was invaluable for Luke. It opened his eyes to workplace expectations and gave him good reason to work on his mood management skills.
‘Without NOVA Transition I wouldn’t be in a job because they taught me ways to manage aggression. I can now identify my own triggers and can handle situations very calmly.’ Luke is proud of the skills he developed during the two-year, post-school program, such as resume writing and interview skills. In the past, he would shake intolerably before and during interviews but NOVA’s job coaches taught him how to settle his nerves, and helped him develop the self esteem he needed to be confident at interviews.
And he just got his driver’s licence! NOVA helps trainees get their L-plates through giving them a series of practice tests. Rightly, Luke’s very proud of travelling to work independently on public transport and holding down a responsible full-time job. To people thinking of undertaking the NOVA Transition program he says, ‘In a way, everyone has a disability but you don’t let it stop you.’
