Simon - A team player who has found his team

‘The change from school to employment is a pretty long path,’ says former Bankstown NOVA Transition trainee Simon. Like most job seekers, he had a few rejections along the way, before landing a job in hospitality at Jamaica Blue. ‘When I found out that I got this job, I was just in complete shock; I was completely speechless!’ he says.

NOVA Transition helped him prepare for the workforce in all sorts of ways, Simon explains. ‘You’re learning all the skills that you need and you’re learning from others as well,’ he says, adding: ‘I learned much more than what I did at school’. (Watch his inspiring graduation speech here.)

Now I feel like my confidence is really high,’ he says. ‘I just feel more positive and I enjoy, like, waking up and getting ready to go to work. I enjoy working in hospitality and working in a team. I just love it so much – it means a lot to me.’

With his bubbly personality, it’s no surprise that Simon ended up in hospitality: NOVA works hard to match trainees with jobs that suit their personality, skills and interests – and Simon’s employer couldn’t be happier.

‘We interviewed Simon. I loved him; the franchisees loved him,’ says Jamaica Blue consultant Chris Kallas. As customer-service person, Simon’s duties include serving food, communicating with the barista and liaising with the people on the register.

Chris describes the entire hiring process as smooth. Simon’s NOVA Employment Consultant was with him through the induction process and again on his first couple of shifts. ‘It was a load off our shoulders,’ says Chris. ‘We didn’t have to be watching him like we have to do with other new employees. I check in with the his managers every couple of days and they only say positive things about Simon. I’ve got a few more stores opening up. I’ll definitely be coming back to NOVA for some candidates. If they have the right person for the job, that would be awesome.’

As for Simon, he loves having such a supportive team. ‘I’ve got really awesome crew workers; and we work in such a great environment. It’s pretty cool.’
